Fleeces and Wool
Our longwool fleeces are perfect for textile projects.
If you’ve read about our sheep, you’ll understand where our longwool fleeces come from. These ewes’ parentage is Whitefaced Woodland, a pleasant, medium staple fleece which, at its best, spins comfortably, takes dye well and can be felted. The ‘other half’ is Wensleydale or Teeswater, so the staple is long and curly, ideal for worsted spinning into a lustrous yarn. Or, use the individual locks decoratively in other textile projects; again, they take dye really well.
We also have cones of Whitefaced Woodland yarn, spun for us a while ago by the Natural Fibre Company. All are undyed and suitable for weaving projects. They include tight and softer spun singles and some 2-ply, including a batch with 10% silk.
Two of our ‘crossing sires’ are Black Wensleydale rams, who occasionally throw black lambs – so we have a tiny number of coloured longwool fleeces, in blacks, greys and dark browns
We usually have fleeces for sale in early June, and often take some to Woolfest at Cockermouth at the end of the month. Don’t miss the date, though, because after that it all goes to the Wool Board!
